If you want to visit two cities at the same time, you go to Tobolsk! The spiritual capital of Siberia is divided with a landscape into two completely dissimilar parts – Nadgornaya (over the hill) and Podgornaya (under the hill).
On the hill, there are the Tobolsk Kremlin and modern high buildings, in the lowland – old houses that have witnessed many events. One of those is the Kornilovs house, who are famous steamboat owners and workers of the fish industry. At one time, their famous relative Dmitry Mendeleyev was here, and during the exile of the Romanovs a personal physician of the royal family Evgeny Botkin lived there.
From 1913 to 1917, the building housed the Tobolsk District Court. And now there is a museum of the history of the judicial system in Western Siberia.
Just like 100 years ago, you can walk through the Great Hall of Court Sessions: the interior has been restored with historical photos; doors have been designed with three-dimensional carvings. In addition to the museum, the house has a functioning meeting room.
Walking along the exhibition halls, you will see one of the volumes of the code of laws of the founder of the Russian jurisprudence Mikhail Speransky, a typewriter of the late 19th century and an icon of Mandylion – just the same once hung in the building of the Tobolsk court.
